Major modifications to four operating continuous steel coil galvanizing
process lines were completed in various phases at a cost of $40
million to increase production and improve quality. Projects included
new cleaning sections, additions and modifications to galvanizing
furnaces, complete new tower galvanneal processes, and various strip
handling equipment. These process modifications required major building
modifications and building additions, new and revised process cooling
systems, new and revamped recirculating cooling water systems, a
new hydrogen unloading station and distribution system, and major
upgrades of power and controls. Later improvements included a new
furnace bridle, new tensiometer, new bridles, new switchgear, new
zinc pot, and additional strip handling equipment.
Engineering included the design of building additions, building
and process equipment foundations, new and extended equipment support
structures and access platforms, equipment lifting devices, relocation
of existing services and equipment, building and process air handling
systems, ventilation, extensive process piping of equipment, electrical
power, controls, and instrumentation. Our scope included preparation
of contract drawings and specifications to suit required phasing
of the work to minimize shutdown times and construction reviews
of completed work.
