The renovations for the Psychology Department Animal Research facilities consisted of two phases with the following components:

  • Phase 1 - Renovation to the existing Psychology Building basement and part first floor totalling 22,700 square feet housing new Animal surgery, preparation and procedure rooms, holding rooms for rats, quail, mice, pigeons, gerbils, cats and fish, perfusion and tissue preparation lab, aviary room, data collection lab, visual testing lab, physiology/optical imaging lab, rack wash and preparation area and associated offices, meeting/seminar rooms. New mechanical room created on the first floor houses the mechanical equipment serving the new consolidated Animal Research facilities.

  • Phase 2 - Renovation to existing areas throughout Levels 1 to 4 for Human Research with facilities for clinical research laboratories, offices, classrooms and seminar rooms.

  • Special features for the Animal Research facilities include epoxy flooring systems with flushing floor drains; epoxy coated masonry walls and drywall ceilings for washdown of animal rooms; central dirty side/clean side wash area with an automated waste evacuation system and full height rack washer and bottle washer; 100% outdoor air supply and exhaust designed for low velocity air movement with specific air change rates in all animal holding, procedure and surgery suites; lighting, temperature and humidity controls located remote from animal rooms; computerized lighting system for infinite day/night light levels; user security access / monitoring system.
